What format should files be saved as?

A: SVG, PDF

What is Engrave, Cut, and Score mean?

A: Engrave partially removes and burns surface area

A: Score partially cuts on single vector

A: Cut cuts on single vector

What is Speed and Power? What settings causes a deeper engraving/cut?

What’s the path the laser beam takes from the laser tube to the material?

A: Laser starts in the tube, bounces off two mirrors on the left side of the machine, parallels the gantry, goes into the carriage, then bounces off the carriage mirror, travels through the lens and into the material.

When should a job be done on the Trotec?

A: The maximum length of the job on the Glowforge is 15 minutes or attention span of the student. If it is longer than that, switch to the Trotec. If the project is larger than the Glowforge bed size, switch to the Tortec. If the material doesn’t have a QR code, switch to the Trotec.

What are symptoms of the lens not being clean?

A: The picture of the bed looks fuzzy

A: Cut lines are not cutting all the way through the material

A: Camera cannot scan QR Code

When should you clean the lens?

A: After Use

A: After 30 mins

A: When seeing symptoms of lens not being clean

Good things to Know:

A: Score quickest, then Cut a little slower, then Engrave a lot longer

What orientation should Engraves be done?

A: Horizontal, not vertical.

When exporting as an SVG, should responsive and minify be checked or unchecked?

A: unchecked

Does the Glowforge cut exactly on the material where you put your design?

A: No

Safety

What is auto focus and why is it important?

A: Machine will check material thickness and adjust its lens. The lens focuses the laser to a fine point on the material.

What are vents? Why are they important? Do both need to be turned on? Where are they located?

A: Vents exhaust smoke produced from the job to the exterior of the building.

A: Both vents need to be turned on

A: They are located next to the Glowforge, except for the blue classroom, where the second vent is a little to the right

What are the potential dangers of using warped material?

A: Focus will be inconsistent across material.

How do you avoid accidents/ fires with the Glowforge?

A: Turn on vents

A: Make sure lenses are clean

A: Do not touch the head or arm of the Glowforge while the power is on

A: Caution glass!

A: Never put anything on machine and never put anything inside of machine you don't intend on cutting.

A: Do not stack materials

A: inspect bed for build up of small materials

A: Never leave the Glowforge unattended while operating

What do you in case of a fire?gam

A: Hit the stop button next to the Glowforge

A: If it is safe to do so, use fire blanket (it is not your job to put out a fire)

A: if fire is larger then you can extinguish head to the nearest exit and pull the fire alarm. Calmly follow evacuation protocol and exit the building
