Welcome To The Fab Lab - Read First

Hello friends! Welcome. We are here to exchange skills, share stories, make cool things, inspire and support each other's learning, and build a safe and inclusive culture around making. Everyone is welcome in the Design and Fab Labs, and we'll show you how to safely get started.

Safety comes first (second, third...). What does this mean? Check in with a S-team member when you come down to the Fab Lab! Coordinate with S-team for Fab Lab use and Design Lab support. Ask ALL the questions! If you get injured, notify a staff member immediately (emergencies: 911). General Safety Notes: -First aid located by sink in the Fab Lab and in every Design Lab; review location of fire extinguishers and fire blankets -Close toed shoes in the Fab Lab and PPE for Shop (and as advised) -Secure loose hair and clothing before using machines -No food; Lids on drinks -Always check in with S-team before using Fab Lab

The Tool Access Tracker shows your status and what is required to access specific equipment. Time can be booked with S-team members using the slack channel @shani @help-makerspace

Progression: Intro >> Guided Access >> Certified Level 1, 2, 3

Many of the Design Lab and Fab Lab tutorials are available for you to get started (See Tutorials)! You can coordinate with the S-team via help-makerspace Slack channel to schedule time to update your progression in the Tool Access Tracker, ask questions, build proficiency, and make sure you understand the process at YOUR pace!

Personal passion projects are whole-heartedly encouraged! The S-team balances many responsibilities, so know that we will prioritize STEAM supports for TPZ workshops and Staff training first and foremost, but we'll also be expanding opportunities for you to come by and work on your own passion projects as well (Fab Fridays). We appreciate patience and grace as we grow our team (and skill up the org) to support more making!

Shared space etiquette: -Leave the space and tools in better condition than you found them whenever possible -Don't assume anything is set up for your project (always check default settings) -Notice something funny? Broken? Smelly? Strange? Run out of something? It is YOUR responsibility to notify S-team and/or use the help-makerspace Slack channel -Build in time for clean up, equipment maintenance (if relevant), tool return, project storage -STORAGE: bins and cubbies in Fab Lab hallway can be used for temporary project storage with your NAME and DATE

The certification process is a work in progress! This tracker is intended to bridge us to what's next--a preliminary tool to help us define (and refine) what Certified means for each tool area. This will inform how we will roll tool trainings and certification tracking with students in the future. For now: we will use this tracker to map your maker progression and see all the people you can call on with questions; spend as much time in Guided Access as you need and ask all the questions!
To a badging system (Fabman.io) which will allow us to access tools by swiping our badge at the machine (it will be connected to your tool access status).Goal: eventually get students on a badged system for accessing equipment.
